My Performance Art

For my performance art project I chose to do an activity in a public place so that the reactions of other people could be used as part of the art. I felt that a public bathroom on campus that gets a lot of use would be a prime setting to be able to use the reactions of spectators as part of the performance. I thought there would be ironic humor in having a romantic date in the bathroom and would tie in perfectly with our discussions of decontextualization. I set up a table and chairs complete with a waiter and flowers and filmed our date as people entered and reacted, with mostly laughs or confused looks. We ate food and drank wine and engaged in as much conversation as we could amidst the interruptions from people entering and exiting. There were a couple of toilet flushes too which was especially humorous. Once people caught on, they would run get their friends or even faculty to come see what we were doing.

  1. Your project was my favorite. It was so funny and really forced people to be apart of it. I love that you picked a extremely bizarre place to film but it was awesome overall.

  4. You had fantastic audience intereaction because they were forced to be a part of what you were doing. I really like the way you had the camera in a way that really made them a part of the experience in such a small setting. This was hilarious!

  5. Very funny project! I thought the occasional flushes were very funny. My favorite part was when people would come in and then immediately leave, only to peek their head in again to investigate. Great job!

I have never seen someome get so dressed up to spend time in a bathroom. The people's reactions to you guys were hilarious, also.

  8. This was definitely one of my favorite pieces, I love how you even had the waiter come out of the stall and take your order/serve your food. The reactions of people were really funny and the fact that the one girl even alerted the professor. Really good job!

  9. This was such a great idea! I loved how funny this project was, but I really wish you had gone somewhere more random on campus or in public where more people would have gone in, especially people who wouldn't expect to see people acting oddly. Definitely one of my favorites.

  10. Everything about this performance art piece is perfect! It reminds me of something you'd see on Trigger Happy TV. Just absolutely hilarious and one of the last things I'd ever expect to see if I walked into a bathroom.

  12. I thought that all of the close ups on your hands, feet, and face were really cool. It was much more effective than if you had just filmed your whole body. And I also liked the dramatic difference between your nervousness at the beginning and your happiness at the end.
